In my experience, therapy is a process and can feel like starting a journey of discovery. How will the time be used, what would be most helpful and what is it that contributes to a feeling that there is change for the better? When reflecting on this, it seems to me that there are three key factors that are needed to give the best chance of a successful outcome.
Right Time. If as a client you are starting therapy because you’ve been told to, or as a condition from a partner or loved one, then it is unlikely that you will be engaged enough to commit to the process. If, however, the feeling that the time is right comes from within, then there is a sense of agency and personal responsibility to explore what is happening. This helps to bring awareness of what changes are needed, and the commitment to take action.
Right Conditions. The conditions need to be right for you to explore what is troubling you. These include whether online or in person sessions suit you, the type of therapeutic approach you need, and whether you feel supported to sit with difficult thoughts, feelings and emotions as they arise. Carl Rogers identified the three main conditions to be present for positive change to occur. The client needs to feel empathy from the therapist, acceptance and unconditional positive regard. These are the cornerstones for sessions.
Right Therapist. Finding the therapist that you feel safe with, connected and able to talk to is key. An introductory session can give you a sense of this, and as sessions continue you will know if the therapeutic relationship is right for you.
If it feels the right time for you to start therapy, and my approach resonates, please get in touch for an initial free and no obligation 15-minute phone call. We can talk through what is causing you difficulty, what support you need, and see if I am the right therapist for you to start sessions with.
